Ophidiiformes

Crested cusk-eel Ophidion josephi, copyright SEFSC Pascagoula Laboratory.

Belongs within: Acanthomorphata.
Contains: Bythitidae, Neobythitinae, Carapinae.

The Ophidiiformes are benthic or benthopelagic, often deep-water fishes with tapering bodies. Members of the Ophidiidae are oviparous whereas Bythitoidei are viviparous (Bond 1996).
