The Paguroidea is a group of marine crustaceans including the hermit crabs of the Paguridae, Parapaguridae and Pylojacquesia colemani, together with the stone crabs of the Lithodidae. Most paguroids have the third maxillipeds widely separated, though they are more closely approximated in Pylojacquesia. The two larger hermit crab families are distinguished by the exopod of the first maxilliped, which bears a flagellum in Paguridae but not in Parapaguridae (McLaughlin & Lemaitre 2001). The Lithodidae have become secondarily calcified and lost the hermit crab habitus of other paguroids.
