The Asterinaceae are a primarily tropical family of fungi biotrophic on leaves (Kirk et al. 2001).
Characters (Kirk et al. 2001): Mycelium superficial, often hyphopodiate. Ascomata round or elongate, strongly flattened, either opening by radiating or longitudinal splits, or by a lysigenous pore; peridium usually composed of radiating isodiametric cells; hymenium often gelatinous, J+ blue. Interascal tissue absent. Asci ovoid to cylindrical, thick-walled, fissitunicate. Ascospores brown, transversely septate. Anamorph coelomycetous.
