Caliothrips is a genus of thrips often associated with grasses though some species are minor crop pests. These include the bean thrips Caliothrips phaseoli, a pest of beans and also sometimes of cotton.
Characters (from Mound & Marullo 1996): Head and pronotum dark with conspicuous reticulate sculpture; wrinkle- or dot-shaped markings present within reticulate sculpture. Antennae eight-segmented; head with cheeks more or less parallel-sided, not constricted into neck-like region. Forewings usually with dark and light bands, first vein with wide interval in setal row. Metathoracic furca with two long curved arms extending to mesothorax. Tarsi one-segmented. Tergite VIII reticulate; tergite X usually with longitudinal split.
