The Cicadidae include the large cicadas, characterised by the presence in males of a pair of covers completely or partially covering the tymbal drum. Members include the periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.) of North America, famed for their mass synchronous emergences after multi-year growth periods. Males of the Australian genera Arunta and Thopha have remarkable dome-like tymbal covers (Carver et al. 1991). Cyclochila australasiae is a common species in eastern Australia whose loud calls have given it the vernacular name of ‘green grocer’. Chremistica is a genus from southern Asia and Madagascar with a triangular head and large tymbal covers tightly closing the tymbal chamber. Males of the southeast Asian genus Purana possess a pair of dark tubercles on the third and fourth sternites.
