The Combretaceae are a family of about 450 species of trees, shrubs and woody climbers found in tropical and subtropical parts of the world. Within the Combretaceae, Terminalia is a pantropical genus of trees, sometimes coastal, bearing flowers that lack petals. The sea almond T. catappa has become widespread in the tropical Indo-Pacific as a result of human cultivation. Petals are present on flowers of the Indo-Pacific mangrove genus Lumnitzera (Coode 1978). Members of the genera Quisqualis and Combretum are climbers or scramblers. Quisqualis has the style fused to one inner face of the calyx tube. Combretum has flowers with ovary and calyx together much shorter than in Quisqualis (Coode 1978).
Characters (Coode 1978): Stipules none. Leaves verticillate, opposite, spirally arranged or rarely alternate, often with domatia. Inflorescence a spike (branched or not), raceme or panicle. Flowers bisexual or male, 4-5-merous, regular. Petals 4-5, inserted near mouth of calyx tube. Stamens usually twice as many as calyx lobes, (7-)8-10(-11), inserted inside calyx tuber, usually exserted. Disc intrastaminal, sometimes absent. Ovary inferior, 1-celled with 2-6 pendulous ovules. Style 1, usually free (except in Quisqualis), stigma 1. Fruit drupaceous or winged, sessile or stipitate; pericarp thin and papery, or leathery or fleshy. Seed 1.
