Cuculus

Common cuckoo Cuculus canorus, copyright Ron Knight.

Belongs within: Cuculinae.

Cuculus is a genus of Old World cuckoos with dark grey or black heads and upperparts and usually a barred breast. Many species exhibit a red variant in which grey areas are replaced with a chestnut coloration. The black cuckoo C. clamosus of Africa is, as the vernacular name indicates, a solid black colour. The common cuckoo C. canorus is widespread across Eurasia when breeding, migrating southwards to southern Asia and Africa.
