Fragilaria is a genus of laterally rectangular diatoms growing in band-like chains (Crosby & Ferguson-Wood 1959).
Characters (Crosby & Ferguson Wood 1959): Cells rectangular in girdle view, elliptical in valve view, in band-like chains. Valves flat, without raphe or septa, bilaterally symmetrical, with row of puncta running perpendicular to apical axis and narrow, clear field along apical axis of valve.
