The Gobiidae are a diverse clade of gobies, mostly small fish with five branchiostegals and a single epural, supported by molecular data (Thacker 2009). A number of subgroups historically treated as distinct families are nested within this clade. Croilia mossambica from Polela Lake in Mozambique differs from other species in having the first and second dorsal fins partly joined and lacking scales (Smith 1959).
