Gomphillus calicioides, copyright Alejandro Huereca Delgado.

Belongs within: Ostropales.

The Gomphillaceae are a family of mostly foliicolous fungi that are lichenised with green algae (Kirk et al. 2001).

Characters (Kirk et al. 2001): Thallus crustose. Ascomata apothecial, usually sessile, discoid, without well-defined margin. Interascal tissue of branched and anastomosing filiform paraphyses. Asci cylindrical, with only slight apical thickening, 1- to 8-spored. Ascospores ellipsoidal to filiform, with transverse septa, sometimes muriform. Anamorphs coelomycetous, spine- or brush-like, or peltate.
