Belongs within: Sylviida.
Contains: Psalidoprocne, Delichon, Cecropis, Petrochelidon, Hirundo, Riparia.
The Hirundinidae contain the swallows and martins, highly aerial insectivorous birds found worldwide. Swallows have long, pointed wings, and most can only walk with some difficulty. The river martins of the subfamily Pseudochelidoninae have more robust legs and bills than the other swallows in the Hirundininae.
Characters (Austin 1961): Small, about 10–23 cm long; body small, plumage compact. Bill small, triangular; gape wide; facial bristles present. Bronchial rings incompletely developed. Wings with nine primaries. Tail with twelve feathers.
