Holopothrips is a genus of thrips found in the Neotropics, the species of which are leaf-feaders with at least some producing galls (Mound & Marullo 1996).
Characters (from Mound & Marullo 1996): Diverse in size, form and colour; head with eyes usually large, bean-shaped to almost holoptic; postocular setae usually arising behind eyes, sometimes reduced; maxillary stylets usually retracted at least to postocular setae, sometimes longer; pronotal setae usually long, anteromarginal setae sometimes small, epimeral setae sometimes duplicated; epimeral sutures rarely complete; prosternal basantra weak; fore tarsi unarmed in both sexes; forewing parallel-sided, duplicated cilia present; metanotum with irregular longitudinal lines, sometimes reticulate or striate; pelta triangular; tergites usually with an extra pair of wing retaining setae anterolaterally; males frequently with more than one glandular area, B2 on IX not short and stout.
