The Hyaloscyphaceae are a group of fungi saprobic on wood and herbaceous material (Kirk et al. 2001).
Characters (Kirk et al. 2001): Stromata absent. Ascomata usually small, flat or concave, excipulum soft, fleshy, usually composed of prismatic or isodiametric cells, almost always with conspicuous, sometimes ornamented hairs surrounding disc. Interascal tissue of simple paraphyses, sometimes lanceolate. Asci small, with J+ or J- ring. Ascospores small, usually elongated, sometimes septate. Anamorphs rarely noted, when so hyphomycetous.
