The Laboulbeniaceae are a group of fungi, ectoparasitic on insects, in which ascomata are formed from a lateral appendage of the primary thallus (Kirk et al. 2001).
Characters (Kirk et al. 2001): Stroma (thallus) present. Ascomata formed directly from successive cells of a lateral appendage of primary thallus, lateral appendage not extending beyond base of ascoma; outer wall cells of ascoma usually large and unequal. Asci 4-spored. Ascospores with submedian septum. Usually monoecious.
