Belongs within: Eupercaria.
Contains: Choerodon, Xanothon, Lepidaplois, Julidinae, Xyrichthyinae, Labrus, Cheilinus, Sparisoma, Scarus.
The Labridae, wrasses, are colourful warm-water marine fishes characterised by sharp, heavy teeth at the front of the mouth in conjunction with crushing pharyngeal jaws (Bond 1996). Many have protractile jaws with the exception of the butterfishes Odax, parrotfishes Scarus and related forms (Regan 1913).
