Characters (Gerecke 2009): Idiosoma oval or spherical in shape; dorsal and posteroventral integument soft, muscle-attachments generally unsclerotised; lateral eyes in capsules; coxal shield covering anteroventral surface of idiosoma, posteriorly approaching or completely surrounding genital field, with Y-shaped suture extending from anterior edge of genital bay to gnathosomal bay; suture line between Cx-II and -III interrupted centrally, opening of glandularium C-4 located anteriorly, near tips of Cx-I and flanking gnathosomal bay; leg insertions not set far forward, insertions of IV-L not associated with sheets or extensions of coxal surface, visible in ventral view; all legs bearing well-developed claws; swimming setae present on II-L-5, III-L-4/5, and IV-L-4/5, or completely absent; genital field with movable flaps and usually three pairs of elongate acetabula flanking gonopore; gnathosoma bearing slender chelicerae with minute claws; palps with P-1 bearing one usually short dorsodistal seta; P-2 usually bearing one strong ventrodistal seta and several generally short dorsal setae; P-3 with four to nine long setae, usually restricted to medial and dorsal surface; P-4 with two fine ventral setae and short, peg-like mediodistal seta, additional setae mostly on dorsal surface.
