The Monandrae are a major clade of orchids united by polygonal leaf abaxial epidermal cells, loss of the lateral inner stamens, porate pollen, finger-shaped or prosenchymatic stigma receptive cells, and presence of a viscidium (Freudenstein & Rasmussen 1999). They include the bulk of orchid species, excluding only the basal apostasioids and cypripedioids.
