Mytilus is a cosmopolitan genus of mussels bearing an elongate, wedge-shaped shell with a terminal beak. Species are commonly exploited for food, such as the blue mussel M. edulis and the California mussel M. californianus. The taxonomic status of members of the M. edulis complex has long been subject to debate, with taxa such as the Mediterranean M. galloprovincialis and the Australasian M. planulatus difficult to distinguish from the type species.
