Palaeorhiza (Palaeorhiza)

The type subgenus of the genus Palaeorhiza is a northern Australasian group of bees that are commonly metallic in coloration and/or marked with yellow (Michener 1965).

Characters (from Michener 1965): Mandibles with bidentate to tridentate apex (exceptionally edentate); glossa of male slender and pointed; clypeo-ocular distance much less than twice maximum diameter of scape; preoccipital carina present, at least medially. Stigma of moderate size, more than half as long as costal margin of marginal cell; marginal cell with free part longer than the rest, apex of cell slightly separated from wing margin; second submarginal cell receiving recurrent veins near ends; propodeum usually with large dorsal surface gently curving onto posterior surface; dorsal surface of propodeum shorter than posterior, seen in profile; ridge in front of mesocoxa sharp. Second tergum with transverse gradulus; eighth sternum of male with apex blunt, bare; penis valves moderately curved down apically.
