The deer mice of the genus Peromyscus are a diverse assemblage found in North and Central America. Deer mice have tails as long as or longer than the head and body, a long soft pelage, and narrow hind feet (Goodwin 1969). The majority of species are placed in the subgenus Peromyscus, found over the greater part of North America. The subgenus Megadontomys (alternatively treated as a separate genus) includes the giant deer mouse, found in the highlands of Mexico. As indicated by their vernacular name, Megadontomys species are significantly larger than most species of Peromyscus sensu stricto. The diversity of Peromyscus species, both at the specific and subspecific levels, has lead to them becoming a model group for many studies of evolutionary processes.
