The Peronosporomycetes, water moulds, are a lineage of fungus-like micro-organisms with heterokont zoospores and cellulose walls (Kirk et al. 2001).

Characters (Kirk et al. 2001, as Oomycota): Aquatic or terrestrial, freshwater or marine, saprobic or parasitic; thallus unicellular to mycelial (hyphae coenocytic), mainly aseptate; assimilative phase diploid; zoospores with unequal flagella, a tinsel one diverted with two rows of mastigonemes formed, and a whiplash one smooth or with fine flexous hairs backwards; with protoplasmic and nucleus-associated microtubules; cell walls glucan-cellulose, rarely with minor amounts of chitin.
