Belongs within: Curculionidae.
The Platypodinae, ambrosia beetles, are a group of beetles that bore tunnels in dead wood. The majority of species feed as larvae on symbiotic fungi growing in these tunnels. These fungi often cannot survive outside the association with the beetles, and propagules are carried by the beetles in specialised mycetangia. The Australian species Austroplatypus incompertus is eusocial, forming multi-generational colonies with a single breeding female tended by non-breeding workers (Bouchard 2014). Recent phylogenetic studies have agreed that platypodines occupy a relatively basal position in the true weevil (Curculionidae) radiation, and are not directly related to the other major group of wood-boring weevils in the Scolytinae.
The galea and lacinia are fused on the maxilla in members of the tribe Platypodini but remain distinct in basal species historically included in the Tesserocerini.
