The Pleosporales are a clade of microfungi producing black, often thick-walled ascomata (Kirk et al. 2001).
Characters (Kirk et al. 2001): Thallus or stroma absent or rarely poorly developed. Ascomata perithecial or rarely cleistothecial, sometimes clypeate, variable in form but usually more or less globose, thick-walled, immersed or erumpent, black, normally opening by a well-developed lysigenous ostiole, sometimes hairy or setose; peridium usually thick, composed of pseudoparenchymatous cells. Interascal tissue of cellular or trabeculate pseudoparaphyses, often immersed in J- gel. Asci usually more or less cylindrical, fissitunicate, with a well-developed ocular chamber, rarely also with a poorly defined ring, not blueing in iodine. Ascospores hyaline to brown, septate, thin or thick-walled, sometimes muriform, often with a gelatinous sheath. Anamorphs hyphomycetous or coelomycetous, varied and often prominent.
