Productida

Dicystoconcha lapparenti, from Williams, Harper & Grant (2000).

Belongs within: Strophomenata.
Contains: Strophalosioidea, Aulostegoidea, Linoproductidae, Monticuliferidae, Productoidea, Echinoconchidae, Sentosiidae, Lyttoniidae, Chonetidae, Anopliidae, Strophochonetidae, Rugosochonetidae.

The Productida are a group of brachiopods known from the Upper Ordovician to the Permian (possibly earliest Triassic). The pedicle was commonly absent (it is present only in some Chonetidina), and many productidans would have lived unattached to the substrate. Productidans are typically characterised by the development of tubular spines at valve margins (Brunton, Lazarev & Grant 2000).

Members of the Chonetoidea commonly, though not always, had a spine row developed along the margin of the pedicle-valve interarea (Muir-Wood & Williams 1965). Spines are more extensively distributed on the pedicle valve, and commonly the brachial valve, in many representatives of other suborders. Strophalosiidina are characterised by the loss of chonetid-type fine ribbing and anderidia. Productidina are distinguished by the loss of interareas (Burton, Lazarev & Grant 2000).

Characters (Brunton, Lazarev & Grant 2000): Small to gigantic strophomenates with dorsal valves markedly smaller than ventral; corpus cavity in profile commonly concavoconvex to planoconvex, rarely conical or even resupinate; ears and trails commonly prominent, latter occasionally elaborated into bordering structures, such as gutters; spines tubular, normally covering ventral valves, may be restricted to hinge line; may also be present on dorsal valves, rarely absent; radial ribbing common, rugae less so; dental plates absent; cardinal process normally present, prominent, some with proximal shaft, bilobed with posteriorly facing recessed myophores; brachial ridges or more elaborate brachial structures variably present; anderidia sometimes present; mantle canal markings rare; internal surfaces commonly endospinose; shell structure crested to cross-bladed laminar with pseudopunctae having taleolae, fine internal tuberculation common.
