The Raninoida or Archaeobrachyura are a group of crabs first recorded from the Cretaceous. They are characterised by the complete loss of the uropods, without even a modified remnant (Guinot & Tavares 2001). The Raninoidea camouflage themselves by burrowing into sediment whereas the Cyclodorippoidea may bury themselves or carry debris for concealment. The Dakoticancridae are a Cretaceous family in which at least some species had the last pair of legs reduced and subdorsal, indicating defensive carrying behaviour (Guinot & Tavares 2001).
