Belongs within: Sordariomyceta.
Contains: Coccomyces.
The Rhytismatales are a group of saprobic or necrotrophic parasitic fungi with ascomata that open through longitudinal or radial splits (Kirk et al. 2001).
Characters (Kirk et al. 2001): Ascomata apothecial, immersed, sometimes erumpent, opening by longitudinal or radial splits, often within black clypeate pseudostromatic tissue. Interascal tissue of simple paraphyses, often anastomosing near base, often with mucous coating, often swollen at apices. Asci cylindrical, thin-walled, usually not differentiated at apex, rarely blueing in iodine, often releasing spores through an irregular split. Ascospores usually hyaline and aseptate, often elongated, often with a mucous sheath. Anamorphs coelomycetous.
