Scaphella

Belongs within: Volutoidea.

Scaphella is a genus of large volutes found on the tropical eastern coast of North America. The radular teeth lack side cusps in species of the subgenus Scaphella sensu stricto (Weaver & duPont 1970).

Characters (Weaver & duPont 1970): Shells small to medium in size (20 to 130 mm), fusiforn, rather solid. Protoconch papilliform, smooth; often with spur-like calcarella on first whorl. Teleoconch whorls convex, finely sculptured. Siphonal notch absent; fasciole absent or indistinct. Columella with several plaits. Thin periostracum present. Siphon with left lobe only at base. Radular teeth uniserial, Y-shaped, with or without weak side cusps.
