Volutoidea

Notovoluta kreuslerae, copyright Natural History Museum Rotterdam.

Belongs within: Neogastropoda.
Contains: Granulina, Cystiscinae, Plesiocystiscus, Marginellidae, Volutilithes, Nannamoria, Amoria, Notovoluta, Melonini, Scaphella, Alcithoe, Odontocymbiolini, Adelomelonini, Indovolutinae, Calliotectinae, Athleta, Fulgorariinae, Voluta, Lyriini.

The Volutoidea are a clade of neogastropods supported by molecular data. Fedosov et al. (2019) included the marginelliform gastropods of Marginellidae and related families in this clade with the Volutidae. The marginelliforms have thickened margins on the outer lip of the shell which is typically glossy and translucent. Marginellonidae and Marginellidae possess a buccal pouch whereas Cystiscidae bear radulae with large, firm, paired odontophoral hoods. Nevertheless, Cystiscidae are of uncertain monophyly relative to Marginellidae (Fedosov et al. 2019).

The Volutidae, volutes, mostly have large, fusiform shells with strong plaits on the columella. Most species have a large, colourful feet and burrow in sand (Wilson & Gillett 1971).
