Epitoniidae

Precious wentletrap Epitonium scalare, copyright James St. John.

Belongs within: Hypsogastropoda.
Contains: Epitonium (Asperiscala), Epitonium (Nitidiscala).

The Epitoniidae are a group of carnivorous marine gastropods that prey on cnidarians. Many are small with porcelain-like, strongly ornamented shells. However, recent studies have confirmed that the violet snails (Janthina and related species), planktic species with more globose shells that float using a raft of air bubbles, are also derived epitoniids. The cosmopolitan Epitonium includes species with convex, sometimes discontinuous whorls that are sculpted with strong, lamellar, blade-like axial costae (Wilson 1993).
