Lutra is a genus of relatively unspecialised otters found in Eurasia. They are mostly solitary and individuals vocalise using twitters. The Eurasian river otter L. lutra is the most widespread species, being found in most of Eurasia south of the tundra line as well as in North Africa. Individuals are brownish grey to dusky brown with a buff or cream throat. The hairy-nosed otter L. sumatrana, found in Southeast Asia, is darker in coloration with sometimes a white throat (Duplaix 1984)..
