Aradoidea

Black flat bug Aradus niger, copyright Sam Houston.

Belongs within: Panheteroptera.
Contains: Mezirinae.

The Aradoidea are a group of flattened bugs, many species of which are found on or under bark of dead or dying trees (Grimaldi & Engel 2005). When wings are present, the sides of the abdomen extend outside the margins of the wings at rest. Most living species are included in the family Aradidae with the exception of the Termitaphididae, a circumtropical group of blind, wingless species that live in termite nests (Carver et al. 1991). A separate family has also been accorded Kobdocoris aradinus of the earliest Cretaceous of Mongolia (Ross & Jarzembowski 1993).

Synapomorphies (from Shcherbakov & Popov 2002): Body strongly flattened dorsoventrally; extremely long stylets coiled within head; abdominal trichobothria absent.
