Belongs within: Megascolecidae.
The Argilophilini are a North American assemblage of earthworms with a strong gizzard and tubular nephridia. Most genera are holonephric, with a single pair of nephridia per segment, but Driloleirus is meronephric, with multiple pairs of nephridia per segment (Fender & McKey-Fender 1990).
Characters (Fender & McKey-Fender 1990): Circular in cross section. Setae in eight regular rows. Clitellum including at least segments xiv–xviii. Nephropores arrayed in two or more poorly to strictly defined levels, arrangement varying from totally random to very regular or in several regular longitudinal rows. Septa all present from 4/5, strengthened in anterior esophageal region. Gizzard single, strong, in v, v and vi, vi, or vi and vii but derived from segment v. Typhlosole present. Intestine origin behind xv, before xx. Supraintestinal glands absent. Calciferous glands, if present, sessile. Nephridia tubular, unbranched though sometimes fused, holonephric or meronephric throughout, with single pair of stomate nephridia adjacent to nerve cord in all segments behind xv. Funnels functional in rectal region, usually nonfunctional anterior to rectal region. Exonephric or rarely with buccal enteronephry. Seminal vesicles postseptal in xi and xii or xi only. Prostates tubular, one pair in xviii. Vasa deferentia join prostate at juncture of duct and gland. Dorsal vessel single. Ventral vessel unbranched in “heart” segments [x–xii(xiii)]. No subneural or lateral neural vessels, their place taken by lateral parietal connections of trunks. Lateroesophageal “hearts” in x–xii(xiii).
