Belongs within: Polyopisthocotylea.
The Microcotylidae are a group of monogenean flukes in which the opisthaptor comprises numerous (at least sixteen in the adult) pairs of clamps (Dawes 1956).
Characters (Dillon & Hargis 1965): Elongate, flattened dorsoventrally. Prohaptor a pair of septate or aseptate buccal suckers placed laterally in walls of buccal funnel; usually armed with sclerotised, tooth-like papillae. Posthaptor variable in shape, symmetrical, subsymmetrical, or slightly asymmetrical; not divided into two separate marginal frills. Posthaptor armed with numerous bilateral clamps; accessory sclerites absent. Anchors absent in adults. Esophagus with or without lateral branches; gut bifurcated, with medial and lateral branches; may or may not be confluent posteriorly. Testes numerous, follicular, postovarian (occasionally paraovarian). Genital atrium armed or unarmed; cirrus armed or unarmed. Ovary irregularly looped (exceptionally globular). Vitellaria follicular, well developed in posterior part of body. Vagina present, single or double. Eggs usually filamented, either at one or both poles.
