Onygenaceae

Culture of Malbranchea filamentosa, from Sigler et al. (2002).

Belongs within: Eurotiomycetidae.

The Onygenaceae are a group of keratinophilic, soil-dwelling and/or coprophilous fungi (Kirk et al. 2001).

Characters (Kirk et al. 2001): Ascomata sometimes stipitate; peridium varied, usually hyphal but occasionally pseudoparenchymatous, sometimes with complex appendages. Ascospores oblate or allantoid, pitted or reticulate. Anamorphs mostly Chrysosporium– or Malbranchea-like.
