Rhyparochromidae

 Lethaeus nitidus, from here.

Belongs within: Panheteroptera.
Contains: Rhyparochromus.

The Rhyparochromidae are a group of bugs characterised by the suture between sternites 4 and 5 on the abdomen curving forward laterally and not attaining the lateral margins; trichobothria are also usually present on the head (Carver et al. 1991). Rhyparochromids mostly feed on ripe seeds that have dropped to the ground. Members of the tribe Cleradini, however, are exceptional in feeding on vertebrate blood. The Lilliputocorini are minute, yellowish brown species found in leaf litter in tropical regions. Plinthisus species are similarly small and often flightless with staphylinoid fore wings (Carver et al. 1991).
