The Muricidae are a group of predatory marine gastropods that often possess strongly developed varices on the shell. The varices may bear prominent spines, flanges or other ornaments. Muricids possess an accessory boring organ in the sole of the foot that secretes a compound used to soften the shells of mollusc prey, allowing their radula to erode a hole through the shell. They also produce a purple secretion from the hypobranchial organ used in defense.

Within the Muricidae, members of the subfamily Muricinae are characterised by a long, straight siphonal canal and spinose or frondose varices. The Trophoninae have a similarly elongate siphonal canal but possess numerous laminate varices. The Trophoninae and the related subfamily Ocenebrinae have a similar rachidian tooth morphology but Ocenebrinae (which include forms both with and without varices) have bifid marginal teeth at maturity. Aspella is a genus of small murexes with later whorls flattened (Wilson 1994). Attiliosa species bear solid shells with a sculpture of scabrous spiral cords anteriorly and low peripheral nodules (Wilson 1994).

The carnivorous neogastropods are without question one of the most successful lineages of molluscs within the modern fauna. Among the numerous representatives of this diverse clade, perhaps the most eye-catching are to be found among the Muricidae, the murexes and oyster drills.

Over 1700 species are currently recognised among the modern muricids. They come in a wide range of sizes and shapes, some growing quite large. Many species are characterised by the development of varices, regular axial ornaments of the shell. At its most basic form, a varix is simply a thickened ridge running the length of the shell, but many murexes exhibit modifications of the varices into laminae, spines, frills, or other such extravagances. The function of such modifications (if any) remains poorly known: they are often presumed to be protective structures, though they may also provide mechanical functions such as improving weight distribution on soft sediments.

Internally, the majority of muricids are more uniform (with notable exceptions). They have a rachiglossan radula, with a single central and two lateral teeth per row. A pair of accessory salivary glands are present, as is an accessory boring organ associated with the radula. A hypobranchial gland produces a purple defensive secretion (Barco et al. 2010). Murexes are generally predators of other hard-shelled invertebrates such as barnacles or other molluscs. Acid secretions from the accessory boring organ are used to soften the shell of prey as the radula is used to scrape through to the soft flesh inside. Even if you’ve never seen a live muricid, you may well have seen their leavings: a discarded clam shell with a perfectly round hole bored into it.

Over time, the muricids have been divided between numerous subfamilies though the definitions of many have been subject to debate. Molecular studies do support a basal division between two major clades, one of which includes many of the larger and often more ornate species such as murexes and trophons. The members of the second clade are often smaller and include the species known as oyster drills. They also include the Coralliophilinae, a derived subgroup of the muricids that have become specialised parasites on corals and other anthozoans. Coralliophilines have lost the radula, salivary organs and boring organ of other muricids and instead feed suctorially. Some have gone so far as to become completely sedentary endoparasites with irregular shell forms to match.

The ways in which murexes have impinged upon human lives have also been various. A number of larger species are collected as food or for their attractive and interesting shells. Conversely, some of the oyster drills are regarded as significant pests, attacking stocks of farmed shellfish. Perhaps the most remarkable way that murexes have impacted history, however, comes from the aforementioned purple hypobranchial secretion. This is the source of the Tyrian purple dye that was so prized in Mediterranean antiquity. Because of the intense amount of time and labour that was required to obtain usable quantities of this dye, it became regarded as the preserve of wealth and power. Roman law would eventually restrict its usage to the person of the emperor, and to assume royal status become to ‘don the purple’. And all from the futile attempts at self-defense by an unfortunate snail.
