Hexabothriidae

Belongs within: Polyopisthocotylea.

The Hexabothriidae are a group of monogenean flukes mostly parasitic on cartilaginous fishes (Dawes 1956).

Characters (Dawes 1956): Prohaptor a more or less well-developed oral sucker or two ventro-lateral bothria. Opisthaptor with cotylophore circular or rectangular, bearing six suckers, each with a large crescentic hook, and an appendix provided with a pair of terminal suckers and one to three pairs of hooks. Intestine bifurcate, generally with lateral and median diverticula, caeca uniting posteriorly and extending into opisthaptor. Eyes generally absent, occasionally present. Common genital pore ventral and median. Cirrus generally unarmed. Testes numerous. Ovary relatively large, tubular and folded, situated in front of testes. Vaginae present.
