Tubothalamea

Squamulina laevis, from Loeblich & Tappan (1964).

Belongs within: Foraminifera.
Contains: Ammodiscana, Spirillinana, Miliamminana, Endothyroida, Cornuspirida, Nubeculariida, Miliolina.

The Tubothalamea are a clade of bi- or multi-chambered foraminiferans in which test chambers are tubular, at least in the juvenile stage. Both agglutinated and calcareous forms are included in the clade. In members of the order Spirillinida, the test is composed of a spherical proloculus followed by an enrolled tubular chamber with a terminal aperture. In living Miliolida, the test is commonly porcelaneous in appearance, composed of high magnesium calcite with randomly oriented crystals refracting light in all directions (Pawlowski et al. 2013). Basal forms in the Miliamminana and fusulinoid lineages, however, have agglutinated or granular walls.
